The eSafety Commissioner has released a blog article highlighting the urgent convergence of generative AI innovation and child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA), warning that AI-generated CSEA material is no longer a hypothetical risk but a rapidly growing threat, with reports increasing dramatically in the past year. The article explains that while generative AI offers benefits in detecting and removing harmful content, it is also being weaponised by perpetrators to create hyper-realistic synthetic abuse images, complicating efforts by regulators and law enforcement to protect children. The Commissioner calls for a holistic, collaborative approach involving industry, regulators, and the broader digital ecosystem, emphasising the need for proactive measures such as responsible data curation, transparency mechanisms, enforceable policies, and embedding safety by design in AI systems.
