El Salvador’s National Bitcoin Office has announced on X that the government has “passed AI legislation designed to provide both regulatory clarity and certainty for the industry, including for the development and innovation of open-source models”. In particular, it is revealed that (1) Article 19 of the law includes safeguards such as sandbox protections and shields against third-party mischief; (2) an AI Registry will be established through which AI developers must register to fully enjoy all the protections under Article 19; and (3) an AI Lab will be establish through which the government can promote research, development, and application of AI within government services and institutions (e.g. “helping to improve traffic flow, monitoring water quality and optimising geothermal resources”). A draft of this AI law has yet to be published to the public.
