Deputy minister calls for ethics in Indonesia’s AI development

It is reported that at the “AI Governance for the Greater Good: Balancing Innovation and Ethics” event in Jakarta, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie has emphasized that the development of AI in Indonesia must adhere to ethical principles, highlighting the importance of preserving human abstract thinking as a competitive advantage over AI. The Deputy Minister noted that while AI relies on extensive datasets, humans can understand concepts from limited experience, which should be safeguarded in education and daily life. The Deputy Minister stressed that the education system should focus on developing critical and conceptual thinking rather than solely technical skills, and she encouraged the younger generation to foster an interest in science as a long-term investment. The Indonesian government is preparing the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap for 2026 to 2029, which will guide ministries and agencies in formulating policies for national AI development, aiming to address specific needs and promote the ethical, safe, inclusive, and responsible use of AI across all sectors.
