Coalition for Sustainable Artificial Intelligence established

France, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have launched the Coalition for Environmentally Sustainable Artificial Intelligence (AI), uniting 91 partners, including tech companies, countries, and international organizations, to promote the environmentally sustainable development of AI. The coalition, announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris, aims to address the growing concerns about the negative environmental impact of AI, such as electronic waste and high energy consumption, while harnessing AI’s potential to tackle environmental emergencies. The initiative involves various projects, including developing a best practice guide for using generative AI for environmental knowledge, launching a global observatory dedicated to energy and AI by the IEA, and establishing a roadmap for standardizing the environmental impact assessment of AI, with the goal of integrating sustainability into the global discussion around AI.
