Chinese courts move to shield workers from AI displacement

Chinese courts have issued a series of precedent-setting rulings siding with workers laid off after being replaced by AI, signalling Beijing’s growing concern over the labour-market impact of its AI push. In the latest case, the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court ruled that a tech company had illegally dismissed a quality assurance supervisor replaced by AI software, designating the decision as a model for future cases. A similar Beijing arbitration ruling favoured a map data collector whose department was eliminated. Judges have characterised AI-driven layoffs as voluntary cost-cutting that does not justify dismissal, while the Ministry of Human Resources has signalled forthcoming policies targeting AI’s employment impact.
