The head of the Network Management Technology Bureau at China’s Cyberspace Administration, Yu Yonghe, published a signed article detailing the development of China’s AI-generated content labeling system. This framework, established through the AI-Generated and Synthesized Content Labeling Measures and a mandatory national standard, aims to make AI-generated content identifiable and traceable. It encompasses the entire content lifecycle and incorporates both explicit labels and metadata-based implicit labels, allowing platforms to choose solutions that fit their technical capacity. Developed in collaboration with experts and major internet platforms, the system has led to rapid compliance, reduced disinformation, and increased public awareness of AI-generated content, contributing to an emerging Chinese model of AI governance with growing international relevance. The article notes that Chinese authorities will tighten oversight of AI-generated content labeling to ensure platforms meet their obligations, including stepped-up inspections and tougher action against non-compliant platforms.
