CAC releases guidance on filing of facial recognition technology applications

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has issued an announcement on the filing of facial recognition technology applications. The announcement clarifies that personal information processors who have processed the profiles of 100’000 people or more are required to register with the provincial-level Internet information department near them. Those who have processed 100’000 human profiles before 1 June 2025 have until 14 July 2025 to register, while those who reach the threshold on or after 1 June 2025 must register within 30 days from the date the number is reached. All processors whose registered information changes substantially also have 30 days to register the change.
