ByteDance faces Japan scrutiny over AI clips using copyrighted characters

It is reported that the Cabinet Office has initiated an investigation into the Chinese technology firm ByteDance following reports that its video-generation AI was used to create unauthorized content featuring prominent Japanese intellectual property and political figures. Economic Security Minister Onoda emphasized that the dissemination of hyper-realistic videos depicting characters such as Ultraman and Detective Conan, as well as Prime Minister Takaichi, constitutes a potential violation of the Copyright Act that cannot be overlooked. The Cabinet Office has formally requested an immediate response from ByteDance’s Japanese subsidiary regarding its policy for addressing these infringements, which began circulating on platforms like TikTok and X shortly after the AI tool’s limited release in China. ByteDance has acknowledged the presence of the controversial videos and stated that it is currently taking internal measures to address the situation.
