Brazil unveils AI development programme at BRICS forum

At the BRICS High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence, held under Brazil’s rotating presidency, Brazil’s Secretary for Science, Technology, and Innovation for Digital Transformation, Henrique Miguel, highlighted the Brazilian AI Program (PBIA) as a state policy focused on ethical, sustainable, and sovereign AI development to address the country’s social, economic, and environmental challenges. Key initiatives include the creation of a top-five global supercomputer powered by renewable energy and the domestic development of high-performance processors through international partnerships. The event also featured the launch of strategic reports and a partnership between the China-BRICS AI Center and the University of São Paulo, emphasizing Brazil’s goal to strengthen cooperation with BRICS countries in areas such as semiconductors, high-performance computing, large language models, and quantum technologies. The forum underscored the importance of robust, inclusive AI ecosystems and equitable data governance to enable fair competition for developing countries, marking a significant step toward more inclusive international AI governance based on South-South cooperation and local capacity building.
