Bipartisan law to govern AI in defense sector proposed

It is reported that the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party have jointly introduced a landmark bill to establish a comprehensive national framework for the integration and management of AI within the defense sector. Proposed by Rep. Yu Yong-weon and Rep. Boo Seung-chan with bipartisan support from 33 lawmakers, the legislation recognizes AI as a core strategic asset essential for future national security and defense operations. The bill aims to oversee the entire life cycle of military AI, from initial research and development to deployment and post-management, filling a critical gap in existing AI frameworks that previously excluded defense. Key provisions include the requirement for the government to implement a basic military AI plan every three years, the formation of a dedicated policy deliberation committee, and the establishment of both a policy center and a research institute.
