The Australian Government has launched the National AI Plan to pursue three overarching goals, each with a clear set of actions to deliver them. The first goal, “Capture the opportunity”, focuses on growing an AI-enabled economy by building AI-ready digital and physical infrastructure (such as data centres and compute), backing domestic AI research and innovation, and attracting global investment so Australian firms can develop and export high‑value AI products and services. The second goal, “Spread the benefits”, aims to ensure all regions, industries and communities share in AI-driven productivity gains by scaling AI adoption in businesses (especially SMEs), investing in workforce skills and training so workers can use and shape AI, and embedding AI across government services through initiatives like the APS AI Plan and GovAI platform to improve service delivery. The third goal, “Keep Australians safe”, seeks to manage risks and maintain public trust by using and updating existing laws rather than creating a standalone AI Act, establishing institutions such as an AI Safety Institute, strengthening oversight of automated decision-making, and promoting responsible, risk‑based practices and international cooperation so AI systems are fair, accountable and aligned with Australian values.
