Australia moves to stamp out deepfake and nudification applications

Australia’s Communications Minister Anika Wells has announced that the Australian government is implementing new measures to combat the proliferation of deepfake and nudification applications, aiming to address the creation and distribution of non-consensual, sexually explicit content generated by AI. Minister Wells said the government would work with firms to develop policy and legislation putting the onus on tech companies to remove these apps from circulation, with the aim to stamp out “abhorrent technologies” while ensuring “legitimate and consent-based” AI and online tracking services are not adversely affected. Minister Wells did not specify a time frame on the coming work, but acknowledged AI had developed so quickly the government was behind on its response and that constant developments in AI technology made it difficult to create effective legislation.
