It is reported that the Australian government is expected to abandon plans for dedicated AI legislation, opting instead for an “Australian approach” that relies on existing laws in areas such as copyright and privacy. At the 2025 TechLeaders summit, Minister for Industry, Innovation, and Science, Tim Ayres, noted (1) the need for precise regulation that addresses specific harms while supporting national interests; (2) the government will take its time to work through questions on AI regulation over the coming months; (3) the government will take an “Australian approach” which means an approach that’s in the Australian national interest, given its conditions and capabilities and broader economic and strategic interests; and (4) Minister Ayres and his department have reportedly begun work on lighter rules for AI which largely rely on existing laws in areas such as copyright and privacy. This shift follows internal divisions within the government and recommendations from the Productivity Commission to consider AI-specific laws only as a last resort.
