Anguilla: The Caribbean island making millions from the AI boom

Anguilla, a small Caribbean island and British Overseas Territory, has unexpectedly struck gold with the domain suffix .ai, originally assigned in the 1980s, which has surged in value thanks to the global boom in AI. Once an obscure digital address, .ai domains have become highly sought after, with names like you.ai selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Revenues from .ai registrations brought in around 23% of Anguilla’s government income in 2024, second only to tourism, which remains vulnerable to hurricanes. Now hosting over 850,000 domains, the market is growing rapidly, with auctions fetching six-figure sums. To protect this new economic lifeline, Anguilla partnered with US firm Identity Digital, which moved domain hosting to a global server network, safeguarding against natural disasters. Unlike Tuvalu’s fixed-fee .tv deal, Anguilla benefits from a revenue-sharing model that could fund infrastructure and healthcare, helping diversify and stabilize its economy. As demand for AI domains accelerates, the challenge for Anguilla will be managing this windfall sustainably for long-term prosperity.
