The Australia Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has published a report finding that Australia’s telecommunications, media, and online gambling sectors are increasingly adopting AI, which is driving innovation but also raising significant risks. In the media sector, AI personalizes advertising and streamlines content production, though concerns exist regarding its potential to amplify misinformation and unauthorized use of copyrighted material. The gambling industry utilizes AI for predictive analytics, personalized promotions, and fraud detection, but this targeted marketing may pose risks to vulnerable users. Telecommunications companies are leveraging AI to enhance operational efficiency, predict faults, and detect scams. The report categorizes AI applications in online gambling into four use cases: predictive analytics for odds setting, personalized promotions, content creation, and fraud detection, reflecting a shift in job roles towards AI-focused positions. While AI offers benefits such as early intervention for gambling harm and fraud detection, it also presents regulatory challenges, as its commercial use may prioritize revenue over harm minimization, potentially exacerbating harmful gambling behaviors. This report aims to inform ACMA’s regulatory work under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, while broader AI policy is managed by the Australian Government.
