Legal futurist Professor Richard Susskind has argued that human judgement will not shield lawyers from the impact of AI, in the 30th anniversary edition of his book The Future of Law. Susskind predicts AGI, systems matching human cognitive capabilities, will make generative AI reliable for most legal tasks by the early 2030s, often without human supervision. He argues that machines already handle uncertainty by drawing on vast training data, undermining the “judgement objection” that many lawyers rely on. Legal businesses that thrive, he says, will be those that build AI systems rather than provide advice, licensing tools that let clients handle much of their own legal work. His most exciting example is an AI-based early warning system flagging legal risks before they arise.
