California Governor Gavin Newsom has named a group of leading experts to help implement his recent AI executive order, which advances the creation of an emergency “kill switch” for frontier models and stronger independent oversight of AI companies. The advisers are Jason Goldman (Center for Shared AI Prosperity), Gillian Hadfield (Johns Hopkins), Alondra Nelson (Institute for Advanced Study), and Rob Reich (Stanford). Proposals under consideration include embedding independent verification organisations onsite in frontier AI labs, verifying safety frameworks and risk assessments, and updating critical safety incident definitions to include loss-of-control events such as the Hugging Face attack. The development builds on recent California laws including SB 53 (frontier AI transparency), SB 813 (independent verification organisations), and AB 1405 (state registry for AI auditors).
