The EU AI Act reaches its main application date on 2 August 2026, bringing most rules for high-risk AI systems, transparency, and accountability into force. Providers of high-risk systems in areas like recruitment, education, essential services, law enforcement, and justice must maintain risk management, technical documentation, logging, human oversight, and cybersecurity measures. Deployers must monitor performance and, in some cases, assess fundamental rights impacts. Transparency duties extend to synthetic content and deepfakes. Some high-risk product-embedded system obligations apply from August 2027. Focus now shifts to whether 27 national regulators can enforce the framework consistently.
