The government of British Columbia has retained CFM Lawyers in Vancouver and California-based Stranch, Jennings & Garvey to pursue legal action against OpenAI over its alleged role in the February Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, which killed eight people including six children. Attorney General Niki Sharma said OpenAI failed to notify law enforcement of violent prompts the 18-year-old shooter made on ChatGPT. Families of the victims filed a California lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman in April. The province is also seeking damages to fund community rebuilding, including a new school.
