OpenAI is reportedly discussing giving the US government a 5% stake in the company, with other leading AI firms potentially offering similar equity, according to the Financial Times. A 5% share would be worth about $42.6 billion based on OpenAI’s $852 billion March valuation. Sam Altman has proposed channelling the equity into a public wealth vehicle modelled on the Alaska Permanent Fund. The talks follow White House restrictions on OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 release and export controls recently lifted on Anthropic’s most advanced models. Any deal may require an act of Congress.
