Florida sues OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging profit-driven safety failures

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a civil lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, seeking to hold Altman personally liable for harm caused to Floridians through what the complaint describes as reckless and willful conduct. The action alleges four counts of deceptive and unfair trade practices, two counts of negligence, two counts of product liability violations, and single counts of fraudulent misrepresentation and public nuisance, claiming ChatGPT poses risks of addiction, cognitive decline, suicide, violence, and related harms. The complaint cites alleged use of ChatGPT in the Florida State University mass shooting and the killing of two University of South Florida graduate students. Florida is the first state to sue OpenAI and Altman over design and safety, separate from a criminal investigation Uthmeier opened in April. OpenAI maintains it designs systems with “safety at every step.”
