It is reported that Google has signed an agreement with the US Department of Defense to provide its AI models for classified use, joining other firms like OpenAI and xAI. This deal allows the Pentagon to utilize Google’s AI for any lawful government purpose while incorporating safety filters and explicitly prohibiting the use of AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight. The Pentagon has previously encouraged AI companies to relax restrictions on their tools for classified networks, with agreements potentially worth up to $200 million each. It is reported that Google is required to assist in adjusting AI safety settings at the government’s request but retains no control over lawful operational decisions.
