Congressman Jay Obernolte (CA-23) and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51) have introduced the Economy of the Future Commission Act of 2026, bipartisan legislation aimed at preparing the US for the economic impacts of AI, which is the House companion to a Senate bill by Senators Mark Warner and Mike Rounds. This legislation seeks to establish a bipartisan, bicameral commission to study AI’s transformation of the American economy and develop policy recommendations for Congress, focusing on workforce development, education, federal AI adoption, and U.S. competitiveness in emerging technologies. The commission is tasked with delivering an interim report within seven months on AI’s projected impacts on jobs and the economy, followed by a final report within 13 months that includes legislative recommendations on workforce reskilling, tax policy, unemployment insurance, and long-term economic growth.
