Japan News Media Association urges rules on AI search services

The Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association has released a statement urging the government to establish regulations for AI-powered online search services, citing concerns over the increasing risks of these services “freeriding” on news stories and violating copyrights. The association highlighted that AI search services are prone to unauthorized content collection and noted that news organizations’ refusals to allow their articles for AI training are being overlooked. It called for revisions to the copyright system to legally mandate businesses to respect content use refusals for AI training, warning that continued freeriding could force media outlets to reduce their news coverage, which is vital for democracy.
