India establishes AI Governance and Economic Group to address job impacts

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced the formation of the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body designed to shape India’s approach to AI governance and its economic implications, implementing recommendations from India’s AI governance guidelines and the Economic Survey. The AIGEG aims to ensure a coordinated government approach to policymaking by aligning ministries, regulators, and advisory institutions under a unified national framework, focusing on balancing AI deployment with its economic impact, particularly on employment and social stability. Chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw and vice-chaired by Jitin Prasada, the AIGEG will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) to provide insights on global trends and regulatory requirements. A key objective is to promote responsible AI innovation while addressing workforce disruption concerns, with the government institutionalizing coordination to align AI growth with national priorities, including economic stability and inclusive development, as detailed in the released documentation outlining the group’s composition and terms of reference.
