Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have introduced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center Moratorium Act which proposes a nationwide moratorium on the construction of new AI data centers until comprehensive national safeguards are established. The bill aims to ensure that the economic benefits of AI and robotics extend to workers rather than just wealthy Big Tech owners, asserting that AI does not increase utility prices or harm communities or the environment. Furthermore, the bill seeks to halt a global competition to eliminate jobs or create destructive AI by banning US exports of AI computing infrastructure to countries lacking adequate safeguards for safety, worker protection, and environmental preservation.
