Canada AI minister and OpenAI to discuss AI safety in response to school schooting

Canada Minister of AI and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon, has reportedly criticised OpenAI for not adequately addressing concerns following the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., and plans to meet with CEO Sam Altman to seek further clarity on the company’s policies. Despite OpenAI’s commitments to enhance law enforcement referral protocols and improve content detection systems, Solomon expressed disappointment over the lack of a detailed implementation plan and emphasized the need for greater transparency regarding how the company handles credible threats. The shooting, which resulted in multiple fatalities, revealed that the shooter had previously been banned from ChatGPT for discussing gun violence, but OpenAI did not report the account to authorities, citing insufficient evidence of imminent danger. Minister Solomon indicated that regulatory measures may be necessary, with support from various political leaders for legislation requiring tech companies to report problematic accounts to law enforcement.
