The UK’s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has updated its ‘Standard for Agents’ guidance, detailing the minimum expectations for tax agents and advisors, particularly those not affiliated with professional bodies. In particular, this standard recognises the opportunities that the technology offers and “encourages innovative use of AI in tax software products”, but stresses that tax software using generative AI should be transparent, with developers ensuring that users know when the software is “enhanced by generative AI”. The guidance also stresses that systems must remain subject to human control.
