EU Commission eyes codifying ‘legitimate interest’ as legal basis for AI training

It is reported that the European Commission is in advanced talks to propose formally recognizing “legitimate interest” as the legal basis for training Al technologies with personal data under the GDPR. The amendment is part of the digital omnibus package sent to interservice consultation and is now being formally discussed between the Commission’s digital policy department, DG CNECT, and its justice and consumer protection arm, DG JUST.
