US AI Safety Institute rebranded to the US Center for AI Standards and Innovation

Under the direction of President Trump, the US Secretary of Commerce has announced plans to reform the US AI Safety Institute into the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI). CAISI will continue to operate within NIST and regularly collaborate and coordinate with other organisations within NIST (including the Information Technology Laboratory) as well as other bureaus within the Department of Commerce (including BIS), focusing on (1) testing and collaborative research to leverage and secure commercial AI; (2) developing guidelines and voluntary standards with NIST; (3) establishing agreements with private sector AI developers for unclassified evaluations of national security risks (like cybersecurity and biosecurity); and (4) assessing both US and adversary AI capabilities, including potential vulnerabilities and foreign influence.
